Dom and I made sure that his hood was in good working order before we checked out the rest of the car.
"You better not wear yourself out." I panted into his ear. "You got a race tonight."
"This only makes me race better." He grunted back.
I had sweat dripping down my back, and the top of Dom's head was starting to glisten. The fan in the corner only stirred the hot air around the garage, but it felt nice. Dom and I crashed together, barely in rhythm, each of us greedily trying to meet our own needs. We came together though, Dom collapsing across the hood, me laying back on it. I arched by back, and Dom's slick hands glided across the smooth enamel of the car.
"@#%$ girl." He moaned. "One of these days you're going to be the death of me." I smiled calmly back at him.
"We better get back to checking out your car." I whispered. I couldnt resist leaning up to gnaw on his ear.
"You did that and mentioned my car in the same sentence?" He questioned. I plucked Mia's tank top from Dom's mirror, and slid off the car in search of my thong.
"Aye Papi." I smiled. "Later tonight if you win."
"When I win." He corrected me. I laughed.
"Sure." I reached down to help him with his khakis. I tugged on my own pants. But when I stooped to zip my boots, and Dom swept me up again. He kissed me hard, pushing his body into mine.
"Dom." I pulled back. "Your cars gonna fall apart tonight." I warned.
"I know." He said bashfully. "I couldnt help it."
We finished clothing ourselves, and then returned to checking the car. Dom fiddled with his Nos tanks, while I checked his oil. I was cleaning his windshield, when he stopped.
"I think I'm going to have Vince sit with Mia at the store." He said, making me laugh. "Vince will protect Mia, and Brian wont like him being there." It was a good idea we both thought about it quietly, while making last minute touch ups.
We left the garage about a half hour later to get home for dinner. I was certain that the guys had already replayed the days prior events a million times, and Mia was probably ready to kill them. I cornered her in the bathroom when we were all getting ready for the races. She looked at me like I was nuts.
"You're not upset about what happened today?" I asked.
"No." She shook her head, and loaded a chunk of her hair in the curling iron.
"You're @#%$ kidding me." I said. I sat on the edge of the bathtub.
"I'm not going to make a big deal of it." She said matter-of-factly. "I mean, the bigger deal I make of it, the more Dom is going to hate him right?" I nodded. "So if I act like nothings wrong, then things are going to die down eventually. And if he's worth it, and he can stick it out then he's good enough."
"You have a @#%$ up way of dealing with love." I said. She laughed.
"Oh yeah and you and Dom have a wonderful thing going on. You fight like kindergartners." I laughed with her.
"We better get going." She said, giving her hair one last fluff. I nodded.
"I think I'm going to change my shirt." I said. I looked down at the glittery mess of red fabric that Mia had given me to wear. Every time I moved, a shower of glitter dusted every surface in sight.
"But thats so cute!" She protested. "And it was on sale!"
"Its not me." I said waving a spray of glitter at her.
"Fine." She said. "Ill meet ya down stairs. I'm gonna get some stuff ready so I'm not rushing after the race."
I headed into Dom's room, and flipped through the closet. I left the red shirt in a pile on the floor, and slipped on my sheer snakeskin print tee. Perfect. I clomped down the stairs in my flame boots, and ran into the living room. The boys were playing video games, a pre-race ritual; Dom was in the middle of the couch between Leon and Jesse, who couldnt sit still, while Vince lounged in front of the couch yelling directions. I climbed over the back of the couch, my clumsy boots barely missing Vince's head, and settled into Dom's lap. Dom won every game, only frustrating Vince more.
"Its almost ten!" Mia called form the kitchen. Leon and Jesse jumped up.
"Go time." Dom whispered in my ear. I smiled.
Mia and I loaded into my car, I was going to try and get a race in, and she didnt feel like being stuck in the car with Dom. Leon took his car so he could run the scanners, and Vince took his car out of pure stubbornness. Jesse wanted to take his just to show. So we snaked along the roads, goofing around until we reached the alley. Dom always pulled in first everyone knew that. They were all waiting to see him, why shove him in the back.
There was a layer of cars on either side of the street, and tramps and hoes ran from car to car, checking out the drivers rather than the machines, trying to pick which one they would be going home with. The cars were sparkling, the air was filled with adrenaline, as racers drifted casually off into their own groups.
We were the last to arrive, a rarity with us. Vince just had to finish that last game, and we always showed up together so we could park by one another. The alley was so full that night though, that we didnt even bother looking for spots. Dom parked in the middle of the lane, and climbed from his car. I pulled up behind him, with Leon next to me, with Jesse and Vince in tow. I pulled my key out of the ignition, and straightened my skirt before reaching for the door handle. I looked up, and saw these two blond ass tramps making their way towards Dom. Did they not see me there? I mean hello!
I stood from my car, a sneer already on my face. It wasnt only them I was riffed at Dom was paying attention to them? What the @#%$? He asked the taller one about her yoga @#%$. When the hell did he ever ask me about yoga not that I took yoga classes but still! I bristled at the sight of them, and Vince let out a low whistle from behind. It was all the encouragement I needed. I strolled forward, and glared icily at the girls.
"Rooww." I growled. "I smell " I sniffed the rank air around me, "Skanks." Dom rolled his eyes, and both girls stood up a little straighter. "Why dont you girls just pack it up before I leave tread marks on your face." I threatened. Dom gave me a look. He glared at me, mostly in disbelief.
"Aight." They muttered, before retreating into the crowd. They had tried @#%$ like that before, and as they had obviously learned they knew they shouldnt test me.
"Letty I was just talking." Dom insisted.
"Yeah whatever." I muttered. I crossed my arms over my chest, and pushed past him, already in a bad mood for the night. Dom ignored my attitude, and turned his attention on Hector.
"Ok Hector, Edwin." Dom called. The boys came together to discuss the race. I drifted to the edge of the circle that had formed, and watched feeling bored. It was always the same thing until Brian appeared.
He filtered through the crowd, and looked completely out of place. He stood tall though, and tried to look unaffected. Dom smirked at him, and I saw Vince clenching his fists. Mia eyed me through the crowd, and I had to laugh. This guy had balls.
"I dont have any cash but I do have the pink slip to my car." He offered.
"Buddy "Jesse scoffed. "You cant just climb into the ring with Ali cuz you think you can box." Brian nodded, and pointed at Vince.
"He knows I can box." He said. Vince clenched his jaw, and looked like he wanted to rip the punk to shreds. "So check it out, its like this." He said, offering his slips. "I lose, winner takes me car, clean and clear but if I win I take the cash and I take the respect."
"Respect " Dom scoffed.
"To some people thats more important." Brain said quieter. He passed a small glance at Mia, that Dom didnt catch.
"That your car?" Dom asked.
He pointed at the lime green eclipse that rested impatiently behind us. The whole crowd turned as Jesse leapt at the chance to examine it. He started rattling off parts, but I didnt pay attention. I drifted towards Mia.
"Can you believe that?" I asked. I glanced back at the boys; each of them had their heads under the hood of the car, inspecting the engine, and every once in a while someone would let out a whoop of awe. Mia nodded slowly. "Kinda weird that he just appeared, and now he wants to race I guess " I said it more to myself, but Mia ignored me if she had heard. I stepped closer to the car. "Thats a decent car." I muttered. Mia raised her eyebrows.
"Yeah it is." She said agreeing. She wouldnt take her eyes off Brian. She smiled sweetly, trying to catch his attention. We peered on, waiting for them to finish.
"Lets go." Dom announced. It was race time!
We all piled back into our cars, and sped off. The alley grew silent again as modified engines rumbled through the darkened streets. We chased each other to the newest racing spot.
We separated from the team, and our cars were scattered among the rest, except for Dom. He lined up with Edwin, and Brian, and Danny, who was also in on the race.
"This street always makes me nervous." Mia admitted, as I parked my car. "I got a bad feeling tonight." She said before getting out. I had to agree; maybe I wouldnt get to race tonight
Mia and I leaned back on my car, waiting for the action. Vince sulked along the line of cars looking for some ass to hit on for the night, Jesse darted along the cars, checking everything out, words tumbling form his mouth a mile a minute. I picked at my nails, waiting for the race to start. I was bored, but I knew this one would be something to watch. Who knew what this Brian kid could do.
"I dont know who to root for!" Mia whispered excitedly. I raised my eyebrows in disbelief. "I'm kidding!" She chastised me. "Its always Dom." Her eyes drifted towards Brians car, and I had a feeling she was fibbing.
The boys lined up, gliding in front of the crowd, one last cruise. Brian was closest to Vince, and he made it a point to get right up next to the car to threaten him. They passed us, and Vince stood next to Mia. We watched them go by, and then stop all in a row. Brian misjudged the starting line, and cruised past it. The crowd erupted in laughter.
"Rookie." I muttered. Mia gave me a look. Dom was all the way on the other side, so I couldnt go to him. I would just have to wait till the end, after he won.
Dom cranked up his stereo, and adjusted his Nos, while Danny warmed up with his video games. Edwin was busy hitting on some girl, and Brian was talking to himself. This kids a joke, I thought to myself.
Hector picked up his two-way, and spoke into it. He eyed the racers, and a rush went through the crowd. His arms lifted, and in the two seconds that they were up, it felt like everyones hearts stopped. Flames were spewing from the back of each car.
"Go!" He shouted, dropping his arms.
The tires squealed, and the cars exploded form the line. They shot forward with such force, it made my hair blow back from my face. The crowd went nuts, and everyone cheered. Brian swerved violently, and for a second, I thought he was headed for the crowd.
"Loser." Vince muttered.
He straightened out though, and slowly started gaining on the rest. Dom was in a casual lead, with Danny right on his tail. Edwin started to gain on them, but it was Brian that really took off. He used his Nos, the hissing sound cut through the night air. He jerked forward, and for a second, it looked like he was going to catch Dom. He passed him the tiniest bit, and then started pulling away. It was too soon though, and Dom knew that. Brian every so slowly started to burn out, and thats when Dom made his move. He waited about two seconds, before using his own Nos. He shot forward, and crossed the line a few feet before Brian did. I didnt even have to look. I knew by the cheers in the crowd, that Dom had won. If it had been Brian, there would have been a much more different reaction.
Brians car swerved, and came to a stop facing the wrong way. There was smoke coming from under the hood, but no one cared. The boys rounded the block, except for Brian, and the crowd flocked to Dom as soon as he got out of his car. I hung back a second waiting for Dom to soak up his glory. Vince came up behind me.
"I knew he was shutting that punk down." He muttered. I rolled my eyes.
"You are such a guy!" I said back. He shoved his face in mine.
"What?" He snapped. I looked over at Mia. He followed my gaze, and I saw him soften a second. "So!" He said, trying to sound carefree. I saw otherwise in his eyes though.
"Youre only pushing her away." I whispered, I flung my arms out, but I had to stop, Mia was coming up next to us.
Hector ran up to Dom and shoved a wad of cash at him. "Heres what you won right here." He said laughing.
"My sister holds the cash." He told him. "Count it." He whispered to Mia. She held the stack of bills, and set out to count the amount. I glanced from Vince's forehead, and barely had enough time to brace myself as Dom scooped me up.
"And you're my trophy." He murmured.
"Oh yeah?" I asked. I cupped the back of his neck, and let him show me off. Damn right I was his trophy cuz no one else was going home with him.
"Yeah." He said. He was going to say more, but the puttering of Brian's engine made everyone turn.
He got out of his car all smiles. He looked like a goof. Dom set em down and went over to him. Jesse jumped ahead, and went straight for the car. He lifted the hood releasing a cloud of smoke. The crowd went nuts.
"What are you smiling about?" Dom asked.
"Dude I almost had you!" Brian insisted.
"You almost had me?" He asked in disbelief. "You never had me, you never had your car!" He laughed. "Granny shifting not double clutching like you should!" I had to laugh. Brian's smile started to drop a little, and Dom was still going off.
"Ask any racer any real racer, it dont matter if you win by an inch or a mile. Winnings winning." He said. He held his arms out, rooting the crowd on. They cheered, and Brian ducked his head.
I smiled over at Dom. Sometimes he was way too into the crowd. The crowd threw taunts at Brian, but it was Leons voice that everyone listened to. Dom's two-way beeped.
"Oh @#%$!" Leon shouted. "We got cops, cops, cops! GO!" His tires were the first ones to squeal.
"Get going." Dom shouted at me.
He darted away to his own car, leaving me alone. Thats how it worked though it was basically everyone for themselves. I pushed my way through the throng of people that were all trying to get to their own cars. I couldnt see Mia anywhere. I knew it was every man for themselves but there was no way I was leaving Mia behind Vince maybe but not her.
I yanked my car door open, and jammed the key into the ignition.
"Come on Mia!" I whispered. I peered through the windshield, but I didnt see here anywhere.
Jesses car darted by, soon followed by Leons. I had lost sight of Dom's all together. Hell make it I thought. Out of nowhere Mia appeared at the passenger door.
"Go!" She shouted, as soon as she climbed in. "I knew this was a bad idea." She muttered as I sprang form the parking space.
I wedged myself between two on coming cars, and swerved onto the first side street I could get down. A few cars followed behind me, but when the police lights started flashing, everyone broke apart again. I did everything I could to lose them, and as I wove through the streets, the one @#%$ cop that was on my tail finally drifted too far back, and I was able to lose him.
"That was a bad one." I gasped. I had forgotten to remember to breathe. Mia nodded, and swallowed hard.
"That was close." She agreed. "I hope everyone made it out." She sighed. I knew that racing was hard on her. She always worried about Dom so much.
I got the car turned back towards the house, and we drove home in silence, each of us saying our own prayers I guess. Mia drummed the armrest on the door nervously and we made our way through the back roads. When we pulled up in front of the house, I parked in the street. Leaving the driveway open for when Dom came home. Mia's lip quivered a little.
"Hes not here." She whispered.
"Relax." I tried to convince her. "Hes probably waiting until hes sure they're not following him."
She nodded slightly, and then headed for the house. I ducked back into the car do grab my purse and two way. I can call him, I thought to myself. I was fumbling with the phone, when a squeal of tires coming around the corner grabbed my attention. Vince and Leon were racing to get to the house. I slammed my car door, and darted to the safety of the front lawn. They zipped through the street, but Leon was better. He cut V off, and darted into the driveway barely missing Vince's bumper. I turned and watched with a laugh; Vince got out muttering something about cheating, and immediately looked to me to see if he was right. I shrugged my shoulders. I had long ago learned to not take sides.
"Hear from Dom?" I called. He looked for Dom's car in the street.
"Naw man." He said. "Hell show up." He turned to go in the house.
"You're not going to go look for him?" I asked. He looked at me like I was sick.
"I got a Corona with my name on it." He said with a smile. I sighed.
A few cars had pulled up, and some trashy looking girls, and a few other racers got out and started walking to the house. In about two seconds Vince would take control of the stereo, and the bas would be up. Then no one would leave with me to look for Dom; for fear that they would miss some of the party.
"Leon?" I asked. He was looking towards the porch, and when I followed his eyes, I saw a tall blond stepping inside the house.
"I uh I gotta check on that thing " I rolled my eyes, as Leon darted for the porch.
I was about to get back in the car, when Jesse came around the corner. The Jetta parked in front, and Jesse climbed out followed by some lanky brown haired girl. I watched them confused; it was like I was invisible. They talked softly to each other, on the way up the front walk. It was like everyone had something better to do then rescue Dom.
"Yo Jess." I called. He whipped around, and saw me standing there. Jesse said something to the girl, nodded towards the house, and then jogged over to me.
"Yeah Let?" He asked.
"Thats not Shyla." I said.
"Yeah thats Chelsea," he said slowly. "Were taking a break." He muttered. I raised an eyebrow. "I think she's going back to Edwin." He said. He started into some big long explanation...but I had to cut him off.
"You know what?" I said. "Lets go get a beer." I slung my arm around his next and we walked up to the house, having completely forgotten about Dom.
