The next morning I woke up ten minutes before the alarm went off. I groaned softly to myself, wishing that I could go back to sleep for the rest of the day. I reached over to shut off the alarm so that I didnt have to hear the annoying sound of it. I rolled onto my side and looked over at Dom. He had a pillow over his face, and was sprawled out on his back. There were glints of sunlight peeking through the slits in the blinds and they slashed across his skin, highlighting his muscles.
I reached over and let my fingers run along his chest. He didnt move. If he was going to be up in time for the garage he had to get up now. I pulled the sheets up around me, and shimmied up next to Dom. I flung a leg over him, and dragged my body across his. I laid my face down on his chest, and felt it rise with every breath.
Dom? I whispered. There was no answer. Dom. I said louder. He grunted at me. Daaahhhhhmmmmy. I moaned. Its time to get up.
I sat back and reached my hands out to massage his chest. I raked my fingers along his ridged stomach, and let them rest on his shoulders, with my elbows on his belly. I pursed my lips and blew soft breaths across the valley that ran from his belly button to his neck.
You're breath smells wonderful. He muttered from the pillow he was hiding under.
Thank you. I said with a smile.
I leaned up towards the headboard, and grasped the pillow. I pulled it down, and rested my chin on it. He squinted in the bright morning light, and rubbed his tired eyes with one hand. The other reached up to firmly grasp my ass. He leaned up to kiss me and I sat back a little forcing him to work to reach me.
You are trouble. He grumbled. He met my lips lost his balance, and crashed back to the bed.
Looks like you need to work out baby. I taunted him, and wiped my lips.
Argh. He growled. To show that he was worthy he started doing crunches.
I placed my hands on his shoulders and tried to keep him from sitting up. He grunted at me and made faces as he forced himself up. I laughed, loud enough to wake the entire house.
Dont forget we got a bust tonight. He groaned as he forced himself up.
Yeah, yeah I know. I said. I sat back and picked at my nails.
A few days earlier Dom had taken it into his liberty to call Jake and set up a bust without telling the rest of us. It was our first bust where we were going to not run to Mexico. We wanted to see what happened around town when there was a bust. Besides, due to Dom's last minute planning, we were booked for the weekend at the shop, and there was no way we could get a hotel anyway.
Were going to be late. I said, trying to keep my tits out of his reach as he sat up for the tenth time.
No I'm not. He said. I'm not at the garage anyway so you will be late. He said, correcting me.
I loosened my knees grip on his hips and sat back.
What do you mean? I asked even though I knew the answer.
I'm going to the store today. He said, averting my eyes.
Why? I asked. I climbed off of him, and crossed my arms over my chest.
Because I need to check on some things. He said as an excuse.
Pfft. Yeah right. I muttered.
I climbed from the bed, and searched for my shorts.
Mia can take care of herself you know. I said as I turned to leave the room.
Letty dont start. He groaned. He kicked his legs over the side of the bed and searched the ground for the boxers I had just put on.
Start what? I questioned.
Start defending her. He said.
Why should I be defending someone who isn't doing anything wrong? I asked. I felt my temper flaring.
Letty. He warned.
Dom she likes someone so what. I said. Hes not going to sweep her off her feet and take her away from here.
Because I'm there. He said. He stood from the bed and went to the dresser for his sweat pants. He wont try anything if I'm there. He said smugly.
How do you know he hasnt already? I smiled. Before you were there. His eyes got big. I cranked the door handle open, ready to beat Jesse to the shower.
He better the @#%$ not have done anything! He growled. Shes all I've got left. I stopped fast.
Shes all you got left? I whispered.
Family wise. He stammered.
I always thought we were one big family. My voice caught in my throat.
Letty I didnt mean it like that. He said quickly. I was angry, I dont think when I'm angry. You know that. He came over to me and tried to reach out to me.
You better watch it Dom, because at the rate you're going she's going to turn on you too. I muttered.
I crossed the hall and slammed the bathroom door before he could speak. The absolute nerve of him even thinking about uttering those words it rattled my insides. I took an ice cold shower, and tried not to let his words ruin my day.
I got out of the shower, and Dom was nowhere to be seen. Smart man. I was now ten minutes late for work, and Jesse was already gone. I could hear Mia moving around upstairs, and I knew that she was going to run down the stairs in a few minutes, all smiles. I didnt want to see it.
I left with my hair still wet, and an orange in my hand. I flew to the garage, and when I got out, the slamming of my car door was a sure sign for the boys to keep their mouths shut. I stalked into the office and slammed the door. @#%$ all of them. And @#%$ Dom. I sulked around the office for about twenty minutes, before deciding to leave the cubicle, and work on a car. It would be the only thing that calmed me down anyway.
I headed back out into the garage, and surveyed the scene that lay before me. Jesse was climbing halfway into a Type-R, while Leon dug through the toolbox looking for something specific. Vince was sitting on one of the benches, flipping through an old magazine, and sucking the salt off of sunflower seeds.
Hey V. I snarled.
He looked up, unfazed.
What? He muttered, spitting a glob of seeds to the smooth cement floor.
Do you not see the two cars that are sitting here waiting to be worked on? I crossed my arms over my chest.
Yeah I see em. He turned back to his magazine.
Are you going to do anything about it? I asked, growing more and more impatient with his new attitude.
We all knew he was riffed about the fact that Mia was interested in someone new, and that it seemed to being a lasting crush.
In a minute. He sighed.
Excuse me? I asked.
In a minute! He repeated more loudly. Thats when I lost it. The mornings events caught up with me, and I exploded.
You know what Vincent! I yelled. Get your ass up and do something for once. You always have to be told what to do dammit! For once do something by yourself. I walked over to the ever-growing stack of clipboards, and grabbed the top one. Oil change ten minute job and hell! You can even read your magazine while the God damn oil is draining into the pan! The garage was silent, and all I could hear was my own breathing.
Feel better? He asked with a witty smile.
@#%$ off. I growled.
I took my own advice, and grabbed the clipboard to the car farthest away from everyone. A new transmission great I would be working on this thing for days.
Vince was smart enough to not say anything about my little explosion the rest of the day. When four oclock rolled around, we all headed home. Vince went back to his place to sleep before the bust, but Leon came back to our place to eat dinner. He hadnt grocery shopped in days, and the thought of eating the remaining can of tune in his cupboard made him sick.
When we got to the house, all was quiet. No war between Mia and Dom, and if I had things my way there wouldnt be one between Dom and I either. I had thought it over, and I knew that I had jumped the gun. I had woken up in a bitchy mood, and it was my fault that I had carried it with me the rest of the day. He hadnt meant what he had said at all I was the one who was wrong.
I parked in the driveway behind Dom and Mia, and together the boys and I climbed the steps to the house. We went through the screen door, and before it could even slam shut behind us, Dom scooped me off my feet. I shrieked and wriggled trying to get out of his firm grasp. Leon and Jesse ducked bashfully past us.
I'm sorry. He said immediately. I went limp in his arms. He smiled into my neck. I didnt mean it. It just came out wrong.
I know. I whispered back. I was a bitch this morning, I was wrong, I'm the one whos sorry. He smiled bigger.
You just apologized to me. He said laughing softly.
Yeah so? I asked.
You never do that. He said looking confused.
I do to! I said my mouth opening.
Dinner you guys! Mia's voice jarred the walls of the house.
I do apologize. I said again. Its just that I'm not the one who fucks up all the time I leave that part to you! I said it sarcastically, and although I sort of meant it, Dom knew I was giving him a hard time.
Oh thems fightin words. He growled.
He reached out and wrapped my head into a headlock. We wrestled and giggled our way into the kitchen, but stopped immediately when we caught Mia's murderous glare.
Sorry. We both muttered as we slid into our designated chairs. The ones that were strategically placed around the corner of the table, so that Dom could touch my leg every five seconds.
We scarfed our food down, and anxiously awaited the call from Jake. Vince came by just as the leftovers were being put into the fridge, and he sat back and had dinner by himself.
We dressed all in black, and Leon opened the boxes that housed Vince and Dom's crash helmets. Wed had the things for years, and they were just collecting dust in the garage. Mia insisted that the boys use them. Bust nights were becoming a sort of habit. We had perfected everything about our busts. The routes we were to take were embedded into our brains, Vince was ready to leap, and now we were going through the front windows of the semis, Leon got a brand new scanner, and he had been using it every chance he got to make sure it was working right. Dom had found a dart gun at an old garage sale, and Vince had cleaned it, and gone to the hunting store for stun darts with a low chemical count so that the poor drivers werent completely trashed after we shot them. We were ready for anything.
Around seven, Dom got the call from Jake. He listened intently, and wrote a few things down on a scrap of paper.
Aight. He clapped his cell phone closed. Were rolling, lets roll! He called through the house.
Jesse came in from the living room, Vince waddled in from the kitchen, and Leon thundered down the stairs from using the bathroom. We all headed out the door, but Dom couldnt leave without a kiss from Mia.
We got in Dom and Vince's cars, and headed to the stash point. Dom whisked the covers off revealing the spotless now perfect cars that were sleeping underneath. It was nice to see the civics, all shiny and ready for action. It was almost like they were as eager as we were to get going.
Aight guys lets make this fast, and lets make this look good. Dom said as a pep talk. Leon, you got scanners, Vince you're with me. Jesse you go with Leon, and Let, youve got backup. I nodded swiftly. You got your two-ways? He asked, eyeing each of us. We nodded again. Aight. Were looking for Rodgers. Lets do this. We all took a few deep breaths, and I'm sure we all said our own prayers.
We climbed into the inky cars that mixed perfectly into the darkening night; the adrenaline was thick in the air. Dom came to my car, and waited for me to get my stuff situated. I couldnt have @#%$ flying around when I needed to focus.
Be careful. He warned.
Aye Papi. I muttered. I got it. I sighed at his protectiveness.
I mean it Let. He warned. No funny @#%$. I smiled.
Well see. I said slowly.
Let. He warned again. I rolled my eyes.
Joking Dom. I scoffed. I was joking.
You better be. He leaned in through my now open window, and planted a soft kiss on my lips. See you when were done. I nodded.
He ran to where Vince was waiting in their car, and Leon honked impatiently from behind us. All three cars started, and rumbled to life, and the night was suddenly alive. It was go time.
